Today was my first time running the Esquimalt LifeMark 5K but it ran through my usual running haunt so I was pretty stoked.
The race was prepared to accommodate 2,000 people but only got a turnout of 472 people. So things were very organized. The race started on time. Yep, hard to believe, but true. The rain stayed away despite what the evil weather man predicted and the sun even came out a bit. Beautiful!
Now, on to the race.
The race starts behind the main drag in Esquimalt (just outside Victoria, B.C.) and heads out to do a short out and back to waste a kilometre, in my opinion. But once that ridiculousness was done, the race course took us over my two very favourite scenic parks in the area. We ran down to Saxe Point and onto the trail for a few hundred metres. My feet loved the bark mulch trail and the ocean view.
After another gradual climb and then it was flat and straight for a 500-metre dash to the finish.
It was at this point that I looked down at my Garmin and saw 25:xx and thought that a possible 26 minute finish could be within my grasp.
Well, I was crazy.
I tried to pick it up, I really thought I did. But I couldn't push it out hard enough. I passed one chick in front of me that had been there for the last two km - she didn't like that. After 200 metres or so she passed me back. I chuckled to myself and let it go - I don't know the person I'm becoming...I ran it in with a smile and what felt like a stomach of vomit to a 27:06 finish. (27:05 according to my G).
Once I was done I looped back to pick up Nicole and ran it in with her. It was a great time!
And now for the stats:
Division F25-29: 7/40 (Yes I can hardly believe it myself - I came in 7th and I am so happy!)
